DIY Guide: Replacing Water Line in GE Freezer Door

If you have a GE freezer with a water dispenser, you may enjoy the convenience of having cold water at your fingertips. However, if the water line in the freezer door gets damaged or broken, you may experience leaks, low water pressure, or no water at all. Fortunately, you can replace the water line in the freezer door yourself with some basic tools and a new water line.

The water line in the freezer door is a plastic tube that connects the dispenser assembly to the main water supply line. To replace it, you need to disconnect the old line, pull it out of the door, and thread the new line through the door and reconnect it.

How to Replace the Water Line in GE Freezer Door

Before you start, make sure you have the following tools and materials:

  • A new water line (you can order one from GE or a local appliance store using your freezer model number)
  • A Phillips screwdriver
  • A utility knife
  • A 2 inch screw that fits tight into the water line
  • A pair of pliers

Follow these steps to replace the water line in your GE freezer door:

  1. Unplug your freezer from the power source and turn off the water supply valve to the freezer. This is usually located behind or under the freezer.
  2. Open the freezer door and locate the dispenser assembly on the inside of the door. This is where the water line comes out of the door and connects to the dispenser nozzle.
  3. Find the plastic water line sticking out of the dispenser assembly. Remove the screw or release the retaining tab holding the line in place. Pull the old water line up through the freezer door.
  4. Thread the replacement water line into the hole on the dispenser assembly and guide it through the door. Fit the removed connector piece onto the end of the new line. Snap the connector pieces together to join the freezer door and water supply lines.
  5. If you have trouble pulling the new line through the door, you can use a trick to attach it to the old line and pull it through. Cut off about 6 inches of the old line from both ends and discard it. Take a 2 inch screw that fits tight into the water line and screw it in about halfway. Then cut off the head of the screw. Now you can screw the new line onto the screw. The screw should hold the new line to the old line without making it bulky, allowing it to be pulled through.
  6. Once you have pulled enough of the new line through, cut off any excess length and attach it to the dispenser nozzle with a screw or a retaining tab.
  7. Turn on the water supply valve and plug in your freezer. Test your water dispenser for leaks and proper function.
